SMM for Nigerian Musicians: Where to Spend Your First ₦5,000

₦5,000 is one push, not a campaign. Spend almost all of it on video views and visible activity around one song on one platform, and spend none of it on Spotify plays until the song already has a moment somewhere else. Streaming numbers follow attention. They do not create it.

This post assumes you are an upcoming artist, you have one track you believe in, and ₦5,000 is what you can spend this month without stress. Everything below uses real prices from Nitro on 26 July 2026. Prices move with the exchange rate, so treat every figure as "around".

What does ₦5,000 actually buy?

Here is the whole budget spent on one thing at a time, so you can see the shape of the market before you decide.

Look at the bottom two rows. Your entire budget buys under 500 YouTube views. That is not a failure of YouTube, it is just what watch based platforms cost to move. It tells you where a ₦5,000 budget does not belong.

Now look at the top three rows. Video views are the cheapest unit of attention you can buy in Naira, by a wide margin. That is the whole strategy for a small budget.

Why should Spotify not be first?

Because plays are the scoreboard, not the game.

A song gets on a Nigerian playlist because a playlist curator, an editorial team or an algorithm noticed people saving it, searching it and finishing it. Adding plays to a track that nobody is talking about gives you a number on a page. It does not give you saves, it does not give you search volume, and it does not tell any editorial team that something is happening.

There is also a plain honesty point here. Promotion increases how many people see something. It does not make them care. If the hook is not landing when your friends hear it, ₦5,000 of plays will not fix that, and you will have spent your only budget learning something a WhatsApp voice note from three honest friends would have told you free.

Spotify has a place. It is after a song has a moment, when you want the streaming profile to look consistent with the attention the song is getting elsewhere. Not before.

One more thing Nigerian artists ask constantly. Audiomack and Boomplay matter enormously here, often more than Spotify for a local audience. We do not sell services for either of them at the moment. Anyone telling you they can move your Audiomack or Boomplay numbers is worth a hard second look.

Why does TikTok come before everything else?

Because that is where Nigerian music breaks now, and it is not close.

TikTok has the largest advertising reach of any platform in Nigeria at around 47.8 million, and roughly 66% of young Nigerians use it regularly. More importantly, TikTok is the only platform where a fifteen second slice of your song can be picked up by strangers, reused, and turned into a format. Nobody reposts a Spotify link. People do repost a sound.

The work on TikTok is mostly not something you can buy. It is:

• Pick the fifteen seconds, not the song. The section people would use, not the section you are proudest of.
• Post it yourself, repeatedly, in different framings. Studio clip, street clip, lyric clip, reaction clip. Five posts of the same sound is normal, not spam.
• Give people a reason to use the sound. A dance, a caption format, a joke, a challenge that does not require talent.
• Reply to every comment for the first 48 hours. This is free and most artists skip it.

Worth knowing: TikTok does not include Nigeria in its Creator Rewards Programme, so you are not going to earn from views directly. Nigerian creators earn through brand deals, live gifts, affiliate links and their own products. Treat TikTok as the place the song gets discovered, and make sure every profile links to somewhere it can be streamed or bought.

How should you split the ₦5,000?

Here is a concrete split for an artist whose main profile is Instagram and who has one reel of the song already posted.

Three things about that split.

All of it points at one song. The single most common mistake is spreading ₦5,000 across four songs and three platforms. You end up with four things that each look slightly less dead. Pick one track and one clip.

The likes are there for ratio, not for vanity. A believable ratio for a reel is somewhere between 3% and 8% likes to views. Buying 3,000 likes on 500 views looks obviously bought and does the opposite of what you want.

The held back ₦500 is not caution, it is data. After a week you will know which clip people actually watched. Put the last ₦500 behind that one.

If your audience is more Facebook than Instagram, which is true for a lot of artists outside Lagos and for anything gospel, highlife or northern, flip it. Facebook has the largest raw Nigerian user base at roughly 48.4 million, and Facebook video views are around ₦786 per 1,000, which is more than double the price of Instagram reel views but still cheap in absolute terms. Facebook page followers at around ₦1,549 are less than half the Instagram price, which makes a Facebook page the cheapest place to look established.

What will ₦5,000 not do?

It will not get you a playlist. It will not get you a booking. It will not get you monetised anywhere. It will not survive contact with a bad song.

It also will not hold forever on its own. If you buy followers or likes, expect some fall off. 3. Paid reach behind the clip that moved, on Instagram or Facebook
4. Profile looks alive so new listeners do not bounce
5. Streaming numbers, last, so the profile matches the attention
